What Is a Midwife?

A midwife is a medical professional trained to care for women during pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum. They are qualified to be the primary care providers for women whose pregnancies are normal and without serious complication. They do deliver babies. Many midwives also offer "well woman" care and basic health check ups for women.

The International Confederation of Midwives defines midwifery as: The midwife is a responsible professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period, to conduct births on the midwife's own responsibility and to provide care for the newborn and the infant. This care includes preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, the accessing of medical care or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures.

How does Mum's Haven
offer Midwifery care?

All clients who birth with Dr. Kassem will have the benefit of a student midwife assisting at their birth. Jessi provides assessment care during the births of all Mum's Haven clients (such as examinations and advice for labor progress), and also offers support during gentle cesarean births. Clients also have the option to select Jessi as the primary midwife (this means that she will provide your prenatal care, deliver your baby and provide postpartum care). If you choose to receive midwifery care (and are qualified), Dr. Kassem still provides supervision and is present for the prenatal care, birth and postpartum care. If complications develop which the midwife is not qualified to handle (such as if a cesarean birth becomes necessary), then you have the benefit of Dr. Kassem and can easily transfer into her care. In these situations, the midwife remains to support your family emotionally until labor is complete.

The midwife has an important task in health counseling and education, not only for the woman, but also within the family and the community. This work should involve antenatal education and preparation for parenthood and may extend to women's health, sexual or reproductive health and child care.
